On the afternoon of July 1st, Carlos Guedes Soares, Distinguished Professor of the Engineering Faculty (Instituto Superior Técnico) of the University of Lisbon and the Head of the Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering(CENTEC), was appointed as distinguished visiting professor of Tsinghua university, and gave a report entitled “Risk and Reliability Assessment in the Offshore Industry”. Professor Fang Dongping, chair of council of School of Civil Engineering, awarded the appointment letter to Prof. Soares. The appointment ceremony was presided over by Associate Professor Yi Zhang, and some teachers and students of civil engineering department attended the ceremony.

Professor Fang first expressed his sincere congratulations to Prof. Soares on his appointment as a distinguished visiting professor of Tsinghua University. In order to build a world-class university, Tsinghua has been trying to keep connected with as more countries as we can. Professor Fang also expressed his wishes that with Professor Soares’s involvement, both School of Civil Engineering and Tsinghua University will be able to develop further and stronger,and get more international reputation.

Professor Soares accepted the appointment and expressed his thankfulness for the recognition. Subsequently, Prof. Soares presented an academic report entitled "Risk and Reliability Assessment in the Offshore Industry".

Prof. Carlos Guedes Soares is a Distinguished Professor of the Engineering Faculty (Instituto Superior Técnico) of the University of Lisbon and the Head of the Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering(CENTEC). He is one of the 5 Founding Members of the European Safety and Reliability Association (ESRA), and has been General Secretary, Vice-Chairman and Chairman of ESRA, and is now the Editor of the ESRA News letter. He has been coordinating the Symposiumon Structures, Safety and Reliability of the Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering (OMAE) Conference since 1989 and has been Chair or Co-Chair of various conferences in the series of OMAE, ESREL, IMAM, MARSTRUCT, MARTECH and RENEW Conferences. He is a Fellow of ASME, SNAME, RINA, IMarEST, Ordem dosEngenheiros, Member of ASCE, AGU and SRA and a Member of the Portuguese Academy of Engineering.
