Markos Papageorgiou was Awarded as Tsinghua Distinguished Visiting Professor

On September 27, 2018, the appointment ceremony of Tsinghua Distinguished Visiting Professor Markos Papageorgiou was held in Room 201, Department of Civil Engineering, Tsinghua University. The ceremony starts with the welcome speech given by Jianping WU, Director of Tsinghua-Cambridge-MIT Future Transport Centre. He briefly introduced Professor Markos Papageorgiou and his brilliant achievements. Then, on behalf of the school of civil engineering, Professor Keifei LI, vice dean of the School, awarded Markos Papageorgiou the certificate of Distinguished Visiting Professor. Over 30 university staff and students witnessed the ceremony. Following the ceremony, Professor Markos Papageorgiou addressed a talk of “Traffic Management for the 21st Century”.

In his speech, Professor Markos Papageorgiou expressed his gratitude for the recognition of the University and the School, said he first came to visit China in 1992, and saw that China has experienced great changes, which also bring side effects, and traffic congestion is one of them. 


Tsinghua Distinguished Visiting Professor is an academic honorary title, which is awarded to top professors and scholars worldwide who have a high international reputation and can play an important role in talent training, scientific and academic research for Tsinghua.


About Markos Papageorgiou

Markos Papageorgiou received the Diplom-Ingenieur and Doktor-Ingenieur degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Munich, Germany, in 1976 and 1981, respectively. He was a Free Associate with Dorsch Consult, Munich(1982-1988), and with Institute National de Recherche sur les Transportsetleur Sécurité (INRETS), Arcueil, France (1986-1988).


From 1988 to 1994 he was a Professor of Automation at the Technical University of Munich. Since 1994 he has been a Professor at the Technical University of Crete, Chania, Greece. He was a Visiting Professor at Politecnico di Milano, Ecole Nationale des Ponts etChaussées, MIT and University of Rome La Sapienza; and a Visiting Scholar at the University of California at Berkeley. His research interests include automatic control and optimisation theory and applications to traffic and transportation systems, water systems and further areas. He is a Fellow of IEEE and a Fellow of IFAC. He received several distinctions and awards, including an ERC Advanced Investigator Grant.
