Professor Pan Peng's team took the lead in participating in the transportation security work for the Beijing Winter Olympics.
Our department has received a certificate of appreciation from the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and the Ministry of Transport, expressing sincere thanks to the Department of Civil Engineering of Tsinghua University for its contribution to the transportation service guarantee work of the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics!
In 2019, a research team from the Department of Civil Engineering at Tsinghua University led by Professor Pan Peng undertook a research project titled "Traffic Operation and Management of the Organizing Committees for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games" commissioned by the Organizing Committee and the Ministry of Transport, to support the preparation work for the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics. The venues for the Winter Olympics and Paralympics involve different competition areas in Beijing and Zhangjiakou, with a large number of venues located in mountainous terrain. Moreover, the competition period was during the winter and spring transition, making it vulnerable to extreme weather conditions such as heavy snow, ice, fog, and strong winds. Therefore, it was crucial to effectively cope with extreme weather and terrain conditions and coordinate transportation services across multiple regions to ensure efficient and orderly transportation services for the Beijing Winter Olympics.
The main tasks of our research team include:
Analyzing the risks of transportation operation and control, as well as the risk factors of technical organizational management under the complex situation of the COVID-19 pandemic during the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Proposing optimization suggestions and improvement measures for the transportation management system in multiple competition areas of Beijing and Zhangjiakou.
Collecting various information related to transportation management and competition services during the Winter Olympics and Paralympics test events and competitions, in order to provide a comprehensive summary of the achievements in transportation management and competition services. And to compile a record and display of the transportation organization and management services of the Winter Olympics, providing a valuable reference for future large-scale event transportation organization and management and operation services.
After undertaking the task, Professor Pan Peng actively responded to the needs of the Organizing Committee and the Ministry of Transport for the Winter Olympics and Paralympics, and organized a joint research team consisting of Professor Zhang Tianshen, Associate Professor Li Meng, Associate Professor Liao Binchao, and other experts. After more than a year of work, the team completed the first and second stages of the project.
In June 2021, with the milestone tasks and review meetings of the competition organization gradually coming to an end, the project increased personnel input for the third stage task. Led by Professor Pan Peng, Guo Hongxian and Zhang Tianshen led Zhang Tao, Sun Jiangbo, and Li Yi to organize and compile the "2022 Beijing Winter Olympics Transportation Work Record". This work received strong support and cooperation from the various departments of the Organizing Committee and the Ministry of Transport, and the third stage work is currently nearing completion.
