Roger Flanagan was appointed as Tsinghua Honorary Professor

On the afternoon of 3rd December, Professor Roger Flanagan, University of Reading, UK was appointed as Honorary Professor of Tsinghua University. The appointment ceremony was chaired by Prof. Wu Jing, Dean of the Department of construction management. Prof. Jing Wu first introduced professor Flanagan's outstanding academic achievements, as well as his history and cooperation with the Department of civil engineering and the Department of construction management of Tsinghua University. Later, Prof. Fang Dongping, Chair of School of Civil Engineering, awarded Prof. Flanagan the Honorary Professor certificate. Professor Flanagan accepted the certificate and thanked Tsinghua University for the affirmation.

After the ceremony, Prof. Flanagan was invited to deliver a lecture, namely “The Challenge of Quality in Construction – Can We Fix It”. He talked about the problems, researches and cases of quality management in construction.

Prof. Flanagan emphasized the importance to utilize IT to improve the quality in construction. Many technologies will impact the quality assurance, like BIM, embedded sensors, digital twins, AI, blockchain technology and so on. Prof. Flanagan embedded many Chinese note in his lecture, cooperating some audios and videos, which made this lecture lively. He answered the question raised by teachers and students at the end of lecture patiently, and gave precious suggestions for quality improvement of Chinese construction, combining the experience when he served China State Construction Engineering Corporation.
 
Brief introduction of Professor Roger Flanagan
Roger Flanagan is Professor at the School of Construction Management and Engineering, University of Reading, UK. He is an Honorary Professor at Tsinghua University, Beijing, Guest professor at Chongqing University, Visiting Professor at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, and University of New South Wales, Australia. Previously Visiting Professor at the University of Hong Kong, and in USA, Sweden, Norway, Kenya, South Africa,Turkey, and Croatia. He is a member of the Association for Consulting and Engineering Advisory Board. He was President of the Chartered Institute of Building in 2007.
Roger’s industrial experience includes previously being a member of the Board of Directors of Skanska AB and a non-executive member of the Board of Directors of Halcrow Group (now Jacobs). He has been a member of Board of Directors and Advisory Board member in USA, Hong Kong, South Africa, Switzerland, Canada, and UK. He has experience of working on projects in UK, Middle East, USA, Canada, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
