From May 6th to 9th, the Seminar on Key Technology for Construction of High Rockfill Concrete Dam and the Project Summary and Consultation Meeting for the “13th Five-Year” National Key R&D Program “Key Technology for Construction of New Cemented Material Dam” was successfully held in Longyan, Fujian Province.
The seminar was held by Tsinghua University, and more than 50 people attended, including Hong Wang, former Chief Engineer of the Ministry of Water Resources, Dongping Chen, Deputy Secretary-General of China Society for Hydropower Engineering, Guoxin Zhang, Deputy Chief Engineer of China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research and Cuiying Zhen, Deputy Secretary-General of Chinese National Committee on Large Dams. In addition, famous experts, headers of relevant departments and designers of high rockfill concrete dams from more than 20 institutes also attended this seminar, including Planning and Design Institue of Water Conservancy and Hydropower, China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute, Jianghe Water Conservancy and Hydropower Consulting Center, Powerchina Huadong Engineering Corporation, Chengdu Engineering Corporation Limited, Fujian Provincial Investigation, Design and Research Institute of Water Conservancy and Hydropower, Sichuan Water Resources and Hydroelectric Investigation and Design Institute, Guizhou Survey and Design Research Institute for Water Resources and Hydropower, Zunyi Survey and Design Institute of Water Conservancy and Hydropower and Zhejiang Design Institute of Water Conservancy and Hydroelectric Power.

Prof. Feng Jin from Tsinghua University introduced the overall technical progress of rockfill concrete and the construction of rockfill concrete dams to the experts at the seminar. According to Prof. Feng, rockfill concrete is a new technology of mass concrete invented by Tsinghua University, and more than 120 rockfill concrete dams have been built since its invention in 2003. Then, Duruo Huang, an Associate Professor at Tsinghua University, reported the latest progress of rockfill concrete researches in the “13th Five-Year” National Key R&D Program "Key Technology for Construction of New Cemented Material Dam ". Next, Hu Zhou, Senior Engineer, introduced the latest progress in the design, construction and quality detection of rockfill concrete dams. After that, designers, from Fujian Provincial Investigation, Design and Research Institute of Water Conservancy and Hydropower, Sichuan Water Resources and Hydroelectric Investigation and Design Institute, Zunyi Survey and Design Institute of Water Conservancy and Hydropower and other institutes, discussed the design and application of rockfill concrete for Pingkeng Reservoir in Fujian province and Gujun reservoir in Sichuan Province as well as the promotion and application of rockfill concrete in Zunyi. Later, the experts inspected the construction of Pingkeng and Matiao rockfill concrete dams on site.

The experts at the seminar fully affirmed the achievement made in the construction of rockfill concrete dams and discussed the key technical issues in the construction of high rockfill concrete dams, combining the engineering practice of more than 120 rockfill concrete dams. They pointed out that the construction of rockfill concrete dams has entered a new stage where the 100-meter high rockfill concrete dam will be constructed soon, and this seminar will effectively promote the construction of rockfill concrete dams for both large-scale water conservancy and hydropower projects and international water conservancy and hydropower projects during the “14th Five-year Plan” period.
